Cold Mountain Samurai

Session Sixteen - Looming Shadows, Part 1

The expedition to clear a path to Hiruma Castle Ruins is underway. Such a large number of troops has not been sent into the Shadowlands (and to their dooms, most would say) in a very long time.
The player characters realize that their journey is an all or nothing quest for the Eikisaku Bell, their only chance to salvage what is left of the Hiruma heritage, the only way for them to withstand the crushing power of the Shadowlands.

On the first morning, after a successful camping stint south of the wall, Togashi Natsuko is asked for a heading, so she performs a ritual prayer to the Jade Egg Kami, Maru. Together they sing for a long time, a prayer to Lady Sun herself. Within the Shadowlands, in the Morning, Lady Sun clears through the thick, smokey clouds and shines upon Maru, as if in a Zenith position. Maru then resonates, reflecting the light in the direction of the Eikisaku Bell.

Off their path to the bell, Hiruma Yagasaki (formerly Mirumoto Yagasaki) and Yasuki Saito spot a group of Dark Moto Samurai during a brief scouting stint: diseased men of the Moto family who have embraced the Dark Kami Fu Leng. The Dark Moto were quickly dispatched by the force at hand. They had captured two other samurai: Moto Michiko, who chose to commit seppuku upon being released when she was given the option; and Togashi Kokujin, a tattooed brethren whom the group chose to keep alive, in spite of his somewhat obvious taint.

When Togashi Kokujin asks to speak in private with Togashi Natsuko, she agreed. There, he reveals to her that he had been imprisoned because the Dark Kami wants to use his blood in a ritual: to use the Blood of the Dragon Kami, Togashi. The blood that flows in the veins of the Tattooed Monks and gives their tattoos power. With this information, Kokujin asks to be released so that he can find his way North of the wall, to the Monastery of the Fallen Chrysanthemum, where his taint can be cared for properly, and where he can also help others. Natsuko cuts the rope that held Kokujin and lets him go. Kokujin leaves, heading north.

The group returns to the main force of the Hiruma and there, they meet with the Daimyo, Hiruma Kage. Knowing that they must perform the prayer to Lady Sun each morning, due to the changing, shifting nature of the Shadowlands, and because the prayer causes a beacon to shine upon the Hiruma force, he realizes and shares with the group the inevitable: they must separate. He will lead the Hiruma, setting up waystations and hidden camps on the way to the ruins of Hiruma Castle so that they can setup a supply line, meanwhile the PCs and a smaller force will lead an expedition to retrieve the bell. They will be able to move faster that way.

They leave the main Hiruma forces; along with them are Mirumoto forces sent as a wedding gift, as well as three squads of Hiruma scouts, and two Kuni Shugenja. On their first day out, they spot a clash of goblin tribesmen fighting a large oni in the distance. Surprisingly, the goblin tribe wins. Yasuki Saito is visited by the frog spirit still, and he offers him insight in exchange for a drop of blood, to keep him from vanishing, his animal spirit nature unable to sustain itself this close to Jigoku.

They defeat the remainder of the goblin tribe, with few losses on their part. They keep a horn that the goblin warmonger general kept with him. Saito’s frog informed him that they had been known as the Oni-Killers among the goblin tribes, and that the horn was the horn of the first Oni they had killed, many, many generations ago. It could prove useful in the future.

Later, they settle a camp and sleep, all of them dreaming of the cold mountain they spent their winter protecting.

Session Fifteen - Wedding Day

The party gathers to celebrate the wedding of Hiruma Kage and Mirumoto Yagasaki.
Meanwhile, Yasuki Saito realizes his duty to his clan, and the very personal request of Hiruma Kage to have Saito fight alongside him during their upcoming expedition for Hiruma Castle, will need to come before his love for Yagasaki. It is revealed that they shared true love in a past life, but they both agree that their current duties hold true, in spite of Togashi Natsuko’s very convincing discourse on love, sex and marriage.

Session Fourteen - The Haunting of Hiruma Takeshi

Early Spring, at the dark, brooding, cold building of the Shugenja Academy of the Kuni Family.
Toritaka Noburiku is joining his teacher in some lessons of very young students. The esteemed Kuni Shikunoko new students are rather young and they have much to learn.

A few things about Kuni Shikunoko:
1. She is a no non-sense teacher: demanding, a bit harsh, but always fair.
2. “Sense Earth” is her strongest ability, closely followed by “Commune Earth”.
3. She is considered a Mushi Master, much like her student Toritaka Noburiku (see Anime: Mushi Shi).
4. She keeps her left eye covered by her hair. It has been tainted.
5. She is often called to assist with the “unofficial Kuni library of unnatural studies” and leaves her students overloaded with homework while she is away (mostly reading and meditation).

Session Thirteen - Twice Betrothed

Mirumoto Yagasaki and Togashi Natsuko head to deal with the new betrothal. Yagasaki wishes to rely on her parents and let them arrange an alternate deal with the Daimyo of the Hiruma family. Ultimately, ’Saki’s childhood betrothal is revealed: the Daimyo of the Dragonfly Minor Clan. Together, they discover that Saki’s parents and the elders of the Dragonfly Clan plot to use them as a couple to join the Dragon Clan in future wars. Saki and the Daimyo decide to break off the marriage, with the Daimyo of the Dragonfly offering the family Katana as Saki and Hiruma Kage’s wedding gift!

This symbolic gift further reinforces the Dragonfly’s stance on peace and never bringing death to Rokugan through battle.

Session Twelve - Maru Speaks

Maru, the name of the egg-shaped Jade Kami that Togashi Natsuko has been protecting and caring for begins to share his past through interactive memories.

Session Eleven - Smugglers Blues

Yasuki Saito seeks his Mother at the crossroads in the northwest part of his hometown, where the smuggler told him he could find her. That information cost him quite a bit.
At the crossroads, Saito expected to see an inn or market. Instead, he finds a cemetery, where he finds his Mother’s grave.

Session Ten - The Journey Down

Yasuki Saito, Berserker of the Crab Clan
Toritaka Noburiku, Earth Shugenja of the Falcon Clan
Mirumoto Yagasaki, Prodigy of the Dragon Clan
Togashi Natsuko, Tattooed Monk of the Dragon Clan

After having spent gruesome months in the mountains bordering Falcon and Crab lands, they make their way down the mountain. Never before in their lives as Samurai have they accepted a fated quest as worthy as the one set before them: to walk into the Shadowlands and fulfill the prophecy of “bringing Summer to the Shadowlands”.

Much preparation must occur before their enterprise is seen through.

They are accompanied on their journey by Moto Takizawa, who desires to aid them in their quest to fulfill the prophecy of the Jade Egg found in the depth of Toritaka Castle. “Bringing Summer to the Shadowlands,” is a bold prophecy, and so vague that the only concrete goal the lot of them have agreed upon is to restore the Eikisaku Bell.

They make their way, walking the wall, trying to find support.

Toritaka Noburiku stays at his school, with the Kuni, teaching young Samurai and seeing old acquaintances. He has barely begun to sense that a stale air permeates these old school grounds, and that strange events are to fall upon Kyuden Kuni.

Making the acquaintance of a Hiruma scout on their way southeast, it was suggested that they approach the Hiruma Daimyo and that supplies and troops may be offered.

At Kyuden Hida, the group presents their plan and ask for guidance. The Hiruma Daimyo says he will give them an answer the following morning. Later that evening, while Togashi Natsuko tends to the needs of the Jade Egg, Mirumoto Yagasaki is cordially invited to dine with the Hiruma Daimyo, who proposes to her unexpectedly. They spend a pleasant evening where they share their duties and their goals for the future.

Yasuki Saito makes arrangements to meet his Father and an old acquaintance of his Mother’s, who claims he has information of her current whereabouts and may be willing to aid their journey into the Shadowlands. It turns out that Otaku Nagatsuke is willing to share after being paid a hefty sum, a debt from Saito’s father, and Saito’s most prized-possession: Saito’s red jacket, which his mother used to wear.

Session Three - Pennagolan Egg Hunt

3 eggs were found in the body borrowed by the Pennagolan. The Kuni Witch Hunter suggest there may be more and that the eggs need to be destroyed and/or studied.

Session Two - Mountain Kami Itch

The Shiraiyama Kami requests a rock be cleared of all snow. Some PCs and NPCs are up for the challenge.

Saruko worked for Ugoku.

Left for work three days ago and never arrived at work.

Welcome to your Adventure Log!
A blog for your campaign

Every campaign gets an Adventure Log, a blog for your adventures!

While the wiki is great for organizing your campaign world, it’s not the best way to chronicle your adventures. For that purpose, you need a blog!

The Adventure Log will allow you to chronologically order the happenings of your campaign. It serves as the record of what has passed. After each gaming session, come to the Adventure Log and write up what happened. In time, it will grow into a great story!

Best of all, each Adventure Log post is also a wiki page! You can link back and forth with your wiki, characters, and so forth as you wish.

One final tip: Before you jump in and try to write up the entire history for your campaign, take a deep breath. Rather than spending days writing and getting exhausted, I would suggest writing a quick “Story So Far” with only a summary. Then, get back to gaming! Grow your Adventure Log over time, rather than all at once.
